This video, posted in 2012 on the website of the European Southern Observatory, takes us around the Moon and shows how it is illuminated not only by the brilliant light of the Sun but also by light reflected from the Earth.
According to the ESO:
“We start on the side facing away from Earth. Part of the surface is brightly illuminated by the Sun, but the rest is totally dark. As we move around the Moon the Earth rises and its reflected bluish light illuminates the Moon’s surface. This dull glow is the earthshine. It can be clearly seen from Earth when the Moon appears as a crescent in the evening or morning sky. When the Sun emerges from behind the Moon the brilliant crescent is seen, with earthshine still faintly visible.”
See? Information conveyed, shared with dull-eyed readers who could care less. But no, Hoge won’t stoop to reveal that he is not the originator of the above copy. He changes a word here or there, but the purpose seems to be to make his readers believe that because he is a contractor of low-renown at the Goddard Space Laboratory (not even a real NASA employee), he has these facts and figures that he can pull out of his ass any time he wishes.
Plagiarism is not a crime. But it is a firing offense in practically every news room in the United States, and rightfully so.
Shame on Hoge for claiming the hard work of others as his own. And shame on anyone who defends this theft.
