It’s Thursday Threatcon, your intelligence briefing on right wing activity. Below are the best reports, investigations, exposées, and debunkery of the wingnutosphere this week. Due to Donald Trump’s desire to punish women who obtain abortions, but not the men who impregnate them, our Threatcon Color Code is DOUBLE STANDARD SATIN
- In manifold ways, American women are already being punished for seeking abortion services thanks to hundreds of anti-choice bills passed in recent years. The people who created those laws are now pretending to be more ‘moderate’ than Trump, but they’re not. Women are literally nothing more than incubators to them
- Texas forcing women to drive to New Mexico if they don’t want to carry stillborn babies to term against their will, and Indiana forcing women to carry nonviable fetuses to term and then requiring they hold a funeral, or forcing them to birth highly-damaged children with special needs but not extending any state resources to help the parents, are exactly why I refer to the anti-choice movement as “forced birth activism.” There is nothing ‘pro-life’ about this sort of gruesome and vindictive legislation
- Forced birth activists are using pressure and bogus legal threats to trick pregnant teenagers into “signing away” their abortion rights, while Republican politicians want to intimidate medical students and researchers from using fetal tissue to study life-threatening microbes such as the Zika virus. Pro-life!
- There has always been a tension between Trump’s stated anti-immigrant and Islamophobic rhetoric versus his actual use of immigrant labor and business dealings in the Muslim world. Now he’s beginning to rationalize the dissonance, saying that his personal Muslim friends are welcome in America any time they like
- Trump would be a disastrous president, and for many of his voters, that’s the point
- Trump is collapsing in general election polls, trails Clinton badly in projected Electoral College results, and loses even among white, noncollege working class men. Some of his most ardent supporters are now turning on him
- Not an April Fools joke: thanks to a generous gift from the Koch brothers, the George Mason school of law is changing its name to the Antonin Scalia School of Law, or ASSLaw for short
- Professional slime bucket Charles C. Johnson has become obsessed with former Breitbart reporter Michelle Fields. Not coincidentally, Fields has been forced to abandon her apartment due to all the death threats she has received for filing assault charges against Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski. Here is a handy timeline of that scandal

- Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal vetoed a ‘religious liberty’ bill in Georgia; Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards will rescind Bobby Jindal’s anti-gay ‘religious freedom’ executive order
- Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley’s sex scandal has deepened this week even as the alleged mistress, Rebekah Caldwell mason, resigned her position as his political adviser. Calls for his resignation are growing and impeachment proceedings appear set to begin next week; state government is paralyzed by the weakness of the ruling Republican Party; Bentley’s former opponent Parker Griffith suggests the governor suffers from mental illness
- Idaho ‘Three Percent’ militia leader Brandon Curtiss has filed bankruptcy for the third time since 2001; he collected $68,000 in rents that he never gave to the property manager
- South Carolina ‘sovereign citizens’ Jefford Henry, Jeffrey Henry, Linda Marie Henry, Makeshia Glover and Bobby McGuire of the ‘Moorish Temple’ were sentenced in federal court today for submitting false income tax returns
- “When you see the person David Hall, tell him he’s not leaving jail either, all right?”
- New Orleans ‘sovereign citizens’ Larell Sonnier and Rana Badie were found in contempt for showing up late to a March 13 hearing and trying to waste the court’s time with immunity claims
- Militia ‘patriots’ are still making threats against law enforcement officers and politicians involved in ending the Malheur takeover
- Already under investigation for his behavior during the Malheur standoff, Grants Pass County, Oregon Sheriff Glenn Palmer has recently deputized a man facing felony theft charges

• The Rewire article was horrifying. I’m not surprised this sort of thing is done by fetus fetishists—very little surprises me any more, alas—but it’s remarkable the lengths they will go to interfere with others’ lives. Again I say, I wish these people would get another hobby.
• As Digby said long ago, “Conservatism can never fail. It can only be failed by weak-minded souls who refuse to properly follow its tenets. It’s a lot like communism that way.” If Donald Trump is the R nominee and loses in the general, the Right will instantly claim it was because the GOP didn’t nominate a Real Conservative.
• I dread to think who Righties will target once they’ve exhausted the QUILTBAG.
• Once more, with feeling: sovereign citizens (I’ll add militia “patriots,” too) are a strange lot.
• It figures that counterterrorism “experts” managed to invert causation. A goodly number of them seem to be snake oil salesmen.
• Pamela Geller and Michael Savage are the perfect marks: they’ll believe anything if there’s been a thin coat of Islampophobia applied.

Conservatism requires the same appeal to perfection as does Communism.
