The man whose name has become synonymous with anti-tax activism has run afoul of the wingnutosphere’s best-armed lunatics.

Fox News has confirmed rumors published on Breitbart News and Glenn Beck’s The Blaze that Grover Norquist, who famously expressed a desire to drown the federal government in a bathtub, has relinquished his board powers at the National Rifle Association pending the outcome of an ‘official’ investigation by that organization.

Internet conspiracy broadcaster Glenn Beck had threatened to resign his NRA membership if he remained on the organization’s board. Norquist was just reelected as a board member of the NRA regardless. Ordered by NRA President Wayne LaPierre himself, the ‘investigation’ is the latest episode in a long-running conspiracy theory involving the Muslim Brotherhood propagated by birther and logo critic Frank Gaffney.

Despite being kicked out of the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) over his repeated attempts to get Norquist expelled from the conservative movement, Gaffney has escalated his campaign in the last year. It is also not the first time that Gaffney has inspired an investigation: his name is linked to past surveillance efforts by the National Security Administration against Muslim Americans.

Norquist, who founded Americans for Tax Reform in 1985 and obtains public pledges from Republicans to never, ever raise any taxes of any kind, has been in Gaffney’s conspiratorial crosshairs for fifteen years. The feud dates back to the Bush administration’s successful outreach program to Muslim-American voters.

Gaffney maintains that Norquist has inserted sleeper agents into high-level government positions on behalf of the Muslim Brotherhood. Gaffney has the eager participation of the most conspiracy-driven figures on the right: his allies Pamela Geller, David Horowitz, and Robert Spencer have also been huge thorns in the side of the American Conservative Union, the organization which convenes CPAC.

Beck recently had Norquist on his broadcast to discuss the matter, but remains unconvinced that Norquist isn’t a secret Sharia shill.
