Sean Parker, who once headed up Facebook as President, and better known as the “bad boy” who invented Napster, has put his hat into the ring for 2014 and 2016 as a major Republican donor. When Parker first entered politics, Politico heralded him as a “cool donor,” and said that he planned to donate to both parties similarly.
“These days — in the age of the super PAC and Citizens United — a campaign donor with a million dollars to spend isn’t cool. You know what’s cool? A donor with a billion dollars.”
With his net worth in excess of US$2.1 billion, that’s a lot of money to throw around, and his choices of candidates are troubling. While Parker says he supports candidates who are “bi-partisan” and “economically centrist”, there’s also something more sinister they have in common. Not one of the candidates he’s given money to in 2014 supports gay marriage, according to Pink News. And it gets worse from there:
“Many of them have voted against anti-discrimination and hate crime laws for the LGBT community. Others have gone as far as to support organizations like the Family Research Council that wants homosexuality to be criminalised.
Among his beneficiaries are Kentucky Senator Rand Paul, Mississippi Senator Thad Cochran and Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina. “
The Family Research Council touts an anti-gay agenda, and has been listed as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.
So as far as Sean Parker goes — I don’t know about you, but to me, he’s looking about as cool as a Koch brother.
And that is not good news for any of us.
(Unless Metallica wants to throw some money in to oppose his candidates. That would be some pretty cool poetic justice. )
